CURRICULUM
|
Structure
The goal for the course is to prepare 'teachers in training' for the
challenges inherent in teaching English. A comprehensive curriculum
of practical applications is presented which pays special attention
to the role of the teacher and learners, lesson planning implementation,
classroom management, techniques and styles of teaching including
the creative uses and production of materials. All skill areas (reading,
writing, speaking, listening, and pronunciation) will be covered.
Weekly in-class presentations insure that the trainer receives experience
preparing and presenting lesson plans. The trainers must complete
two assignments and an in-class 50 minute presentation by the end
of the course. The textbook for the course is Jeremy Harmer's book
entitled "How to Teach English".
|
Course Objectives 1. Study the evolution, characteristics,
and place of the English language.
2. Learn the basic principles of TEFL by examining the history of
language learning and language teaching.
3. Review theories and methods used to teach listening, speaking,
grammar, pronunciation, reading and writing.
4. Discover what makes various language skills difficult for students
of English and how as teachers we can help improve the microskills
involved.
5. Learn the principles of planning lessons for different levels,
age groups (adults and children) and teaching objectives. Includes
creating exams for students and choosing books and materials for
the classroom.
6. Classroom management skills: whole class vs. groups vs. individuals;
problem behavior; and teaching aids.
7. Practicum. Students will write and present lesson plans.
8. Job search workshop. |
Assessment Throughout the four-week course
students will be assessed on a continual basis by their instructor.
Students will write one essay and create lesson plans for a week
of teaching on one topic. During the four weeks, students will create
and present lessons with a buildup to a 50 minute in-class presentation. |
|
|
Certification Students who successfully complete
the program will receive a TEFL
Certificate.
A student's aggregate score must be at least 70%. Students who
fail an assignment will be allowed to re-submit it.
