WHY TEACH ENGLISH?

Ever since the Industrial Revolution, nations have become increasingly dependent upon international trade. In order to communicate between nations a common language was needed. English has evolved to become the dominant language for business, science, and literature. For countries to participate successfully in the current global economy, their labor force must have the ability to communicate in English. The result is that English has become an indispensable part of the future.
Those English-speaking individuals willing to share their language with others are able to enter into a profession that has unmatched flexibility and potential.
Although many people in non-speaking English countries study English vocabulary and grammar throughout their years in a public school system, they lack even the most basic English conversation skills. The result is that teaching conversational English has become a multi-billion dollar business with schools and businesses competing for the limited available English teaching talent-in virtually every country.
The demand for English teachers is so vast that the majority of English teachers hired do not have a Bachelor of Education or much in the way of teaching certification or experience. Those with B. Ed. are often referred to as "professional" teachers, while those without formal training are called "amateur" teachers.
Although a college or university degree is preferred, the demand for teachers is so great that thousands of native English speakers with no degree or experience teaching are working world-wide as English teachers.
While many industries suffer from repeated recessions, the demand for TEFL teachers continues to grow globally. English is necessary whether the world economy is booming or in a recession, because the focus for all nations is international trade. The need for ESL training cannot fail to grow, and with it job opportunities. The result is a wide variety of interesting and challenging teaching and administrative positions all over the world. Teaching English has provided many people with a new career as well as travel and exciting experiences.
